Where we've been...

Lobbied passage of a bill in the state legislature that requires planning time for teachers

Won a lawsuit that held that the Board has to honor all previous years of experience on the state salary schedule which helped teachers receive back pay as far back as 1985 with interest

Accomplished, thru the Professional Advisory Council, a “no Saturday school” guarantee and a change in state law to allow for full day staff development

Successfully lobbied the passage of two bills in the state legislature that keep educators from having to perform medical procedures

Improved the quality of education and planning time by working with the school system to employ elementary art teachers

Donated $5000 to Knox County’s 10 new pre-school classrooms through the NEA Urban Grants Program

Duty Free Lunch Mandated in 1985

Working conditions Bill lobbied for and passed in 2002

Lobbied for and Passed Classroom Teacher to be on State Board of Education, 2003

Lobbied for and received teacher representation on the Great Schools Partnership Board

Lobbied the State Legislature for BEP funding revision that resulted in 18.6 million in additional funding for Knox County's public schools in 2007.

Negotiated an increase in the amount paid for unused sick days at retirement from $20 to $100 in 2007.

Where we're going...

Continue to lobby school board, county commission, and state legislature to increase funding for public schools

Increase public awareness of the teacher shortage and raise awareness that the best remedy for Knox County is to increase salary and benefits

Provide quality professional development opportunities

Continue to lobby for increases in employer share of insurance premiums
